Slaughter decides

Sioux City Heelan athlete Keaton Slaughter saw his dreams of playing college basketball changed due to his success in football.  In the end, that is what led this senior to a Division II program in the Midwest.

Why did you pick Wayne State?
"I felt their program was on the rise. I wouldn't go to a program that didn't have a future ahead of them. I get along with their coaching staff really well. I see a good future with this program."

What other schools were considered?
"For basketball, it was still Augustana, Sioux Falls, and Briar Cliff. For football, I figured they could put 30 pounds on me so I was down to Morningside or Wayne State. I figured Wayne State would be the best fit for me."

What did they say regarding your role?
"They see me putting on twenty to thirty pounds and have me play tight end. They were in need of two tight ends and they have two commitments. The other guy is going to redshirt and I have a good chance of playing or starting next year. That was a big factor in my decision."

Do you have a preference where you want to play?
"I am comfortable both ways. Would I like to play defensive end? Yeah but I am a good enough athlete that I can adjust."

What was the hardest part of recruiting?
"I would say that the schools were so close. Two years ago, if you had told me I was going to play Division II football I would have said you are crazy. I really expected to play basketball in college."
