Overview
Over the last few seasons, Hinton has continued to make a name for themselves on
the gridiron. That success continued in 2013 as they battled through
graduation and still had a lot of success during an 8-3 run overall. A big
challenge is ahead of this group as they make the move up to the 1A level and
have a tough district schedule. Losing some of their best playmakers on
the offense side of the football are a concern but it is a challenge for Logan
Jurgensmeier, Eric Brown, and a number of others to make their impact early in
the year. Their defense, which held opponents to eighteen points per game
in all eight of their victories, hopes to be ready for the challenge in 2014.
Jurgensmeier, Colton Schau, Burke Prins, and Truman Schmitt are just a few of
their athletes ready to make an impact early on.
Top Returning Players
Logan Jurgensmeier: Senior 6'4" 225 TE-OLB Logan will be a 3 year starter for
us this fall, and played some as a freshman, too. He is a big, athletic kid who
has good hands and can run. He has moved around on offense from running back to
tight end, and we played him at split end some last year too. He caught 17 balls
for 337 yards last year and 4 TD's. He is a returning first team all-district
performer at tight end. Defensively, he has manned our OLB position for 2 years
now, which is our toughest position to play. He should have a monster year at
that position this year. There is no substitute for experience at that spot. He
recorded 22 solo and 27 assisted tackles last year, 1 fumble recovery and 2
blocked kicks. He will have to have a big year for us to be successful.
Colton Schau: Senior 6'3" 175 WR-S Colten played most of last year after having
the tip of his finger ripped off in an early season game. He managed the injury
well, and played some excellent football for us. He is a dangerous wide receiver
with excellent size and speed, and he is athletic enough to high-point a
football in the air when catching it. In limited action at WR, he caught 11
balls for 140 yards and 3 TD's. He will have a break-out year for us on offense.
Defensively, he played safety for us. He intercepted 3 passes last year, and
returned one 35 yards. He had 13 solo and 10 assisted tackles. He is one of our
senior leaders who comes every day to play. He is a great kid to coach.
Eric Brown: Senior 6'3" 185 RB-CB Eric is our most naturally gifted player. His
athletic ability tests go off the charts. He was a first team all-district
player last year at corner back. He recorded 3 interceptions and returned one 64
yards for a TD. He had 24 solo and 18 assisted tackles last year. He is a
dangerous return man, who returned 12 kick-offs for 229 yards (19.1 ave.), and 7
punts for 225 yards (32.1 ave) and 2 TD's, which is a school record. His 85 yard
punt return against Sibley-Ocheyedan is also a school record. Offensively, he
carried the ball 46 times for 250 yards (5.4 ave) and 4 TD's. He caught 2 passes
for 38 yards. He is an all-around threat to score every time he touches the
ball. His 40 time was 4.7 last August. He is also an avid weight lifter, and
possesses great strength. We expect him to be an excellent player in all phases
of the game this fall.
Skyler Beller Junior 6'2" 190 WR-QB-LB Last season
was Skyler's first attempt at football. He is an excellent hockey player for the
Metro's team, and decided to give football a try. What we got was a tremendous
athlete with great speed and a nose for the ball. As the season went on, he
became a bigger and bigger part of our team. He has big-play potential every
time he touches it. He can play quarterback, runningback, or wide receiver on
offense, and we plan to use him that way. He has a natural ability to avoid
tacklers when running the ball, and throws better than average. He will be a big
part of our plans for the fall. He rushed for 51 yards on 14 carries last fall
(3.6 ave) and was 2 of 4 passing for 93 yards (46.5 ave) and 1 TD. He caught 2
passes for 96 yards (48 ave) and 1 TD. Defensively he will play OLB or DB. He
did have one interception and 8 solo, 4 assisted tackles, and 1 sack in very
limited time on defense. He still has a lot to learn on the defensive side of
the ball.
Burke Prins Junior 6'4" 230 OT-DE Burke played every snap at
left tackle for us as a sophomore last season. He is big, with long arms and
good technique, for being so young. He is an excellent pass blocker and is
working on becoming an excellent run blocker as well. He has high aspirations
and wants to get to the next level. He is a tireless worker in the weight room,
and participates in sports year round to improve his overall athletic ability.
I'm sure he will play defense for us this year also. He is a project that could
be special someday, if he keeps growing and improving himself, athletically. He
did make the honorable mention list as a sophomore, so other coaches have
noticed him. He will be our left tackle the next two seasons for sure on
offense. Plans to get to all the big camps this summer to see what interest is
out there.
All Other Returning Lettermen
Terrill Henrich Junior 6'2" 170 WR-DB Terrill was first team all-district
punter last year as a sophomore. This was his first varsity season as our
punter, and he had a good one. He punted 41 times for an ave. of 34.1 yards per
punt. He also executed several fake punts that were all successful. He is an
ex-quarterback, so he can throw and run. This makes him a threat every time we
drop back to punt. He will also be one of our go-to guys at wide receiver this
year. In a back-up role last year, he caught13 passes for 288 yards and 2 TD's
(22.2 ave). He also rushed for 187 yards on 23 carries (8.1 ave) and 1 TD. He is
a very elusive runner after he gets the ball in his hands, and has great speed.
His hands are better than average, so we like to use him on the outside. He will
be used much more on defense this fall, somewhere in the defensive backfield. He
is not a great hitter yet, which has limited his snaps on defense in the past.
He will have a great year for us this fall!
Logan Held Junior 5'11" 165
OG-LB Logan started several games for us last year on the offensive line as a
sophomore. He is not a very big kid, but he is far and away our strongest
player. He is an avid lifter who works as hard as anyone we've had before to
improve himself. He will fill a very important role when we put our new
offensive line together this fall. He is a very aggressive kid who likes
contact. He learned a lot last year and should put that experience to good use
this fall. His heart is as big as his body, so we have a lot of faith in him. We
hope to use him on defense as well this season. He has played a couple years of
JV ball on defense, so he should be ready to step up to the next level at that
MLB spot.
Joel Kirwan Junior 6'0" 210 FB-LB Joel alternated with Truman
Schmitt at that OLB spot last year. He finished with 17 solo and 19 assisted
tackles and 4 sacks and one fumble recovery. He is a tough kid who plays hard.
He has tacked on some weight this winter, and will be a real force for us on
both offense and defense. From his starting fullback position, he rushed 35
times for 185 yards (5.3 ave) and 5 TD's.
Truman Schmitt Junior 6'2" 175
TE-OLB Truman started half the games at OLB last year on defense for us. He had
1 interception and 32 solo and 37 assisted tackles, with 4 sacks. He will be
counted on to solidify our LB group this fall. He is a very intelligent player
who is in the right place at the right time. If he gets stronger this spring and
summer, he could be an impact player. He is also a candidate to take over our TE
spot on offense.
Comments
This team will be a work in progress. We have several skill kids that return
from a solid 8-3 team that will play key roles for us. We return 4 starters on
offense and 4 on defense, so the cupboard is not bare. This is our second year
in a row of breaking in a new QB, which is always a challenge. We feel that we
have the kids to run and catch the ball, so our passing game looks like a
strength, if we get adequate QB play. Our offensive line will need to be
re-built, and that is our main concern on offense. We do not have great size to
rely on, so we will have to have great technique and play with a lot of heart.
Defensively, we feel that our defensive backfield could be our strength, as we
return several key players who played a lot last year. Our linebacking corp will
need to grow up fast, as we lost our two leading tacklers from this group. We do
return an all-district punter, but we will need to develop a kicking specialist.
We have many question marks, but our kids will rise to the challenge and compete
each week.
