How did the first half of the AAU season end up going for your team
overall?
Overall it was a success. We had shown many signs of improvement,
and the kids are getting better. This group is one of the hardest working,
competitive groups I have ever coached. They want to learn, and get better, and
that 's what making them improve and us successful. We lead the state in wins
with 22 at the 17U level, so that is another great accomplishment.
What
tournament did you play your best at?
It is really hard to pick just one,
but we had a great back to back weekend stint in Minneapolis. At the NY2LA
event, we went 5-1 and won the championship, and followed that up with a 5-1
weekend in the Meg Vang Classic, winning 8 in a row through that stretch.
Who has consistently played the best for your team?
We have had a great
balance of leadership, but if I had to pick a couple guys who have showed up and
played great every weekend, it would be Jake Velky, Lincoln Conrey and Roman
Youngblut. They are experienced Varsity players, and know how to get the job
done, and help facilitate to their teammates. Caleb Hageman and Jay Wolfe have
also played well every tourney we have been at.
Who has been able to make
the most over improvements during that time?
This again is hard to pick a
few, as everyone has improved since we started playing. The two that stand out
were both new to our program, and you can see their improvement since we
started. Jayden Clayton and Jeff Kardell, have shown huge signs of improvement,
and have become some of our go to guys. Their explosiveness and knowledge of the
game is great!
What areas can your team improve for the second half of
the circuit?
We struggled at times on some little things, that make a big
difference. Securing rebounds, getting loose balls, all of that. It is just a
matter of toughness, I would like to see our guys get a little more tough, and
continue to turn our defense, into easy fast break dunks, and points.
What are the keys for your team to have a successful run in July?
Having a
full, competitive team at each tournament will be key for us. We will have some
kids playing baseball, so they will be very worn out, but we will battle through
it. July is a key month for them for recruiting, and for getting better before
they hit their Fall school leagues.
Where will your team be playing in
July?
We will kick off our summer circuit in Milwaukee, at the NY2LA event.
We then go to the Jimmy V Classic in the Wisconsin Dells (an event we won two
years ago, and semi-finals last year). And we will then finish off the AAU
season with a week-long trip to Las Vegas, for the Fab 48 Classic.
What
is going on with the recruiting of your players?
It is early, but we have a
few players with some D2 interest, and a lot with D3 interest. Lincoln Conrey,
Jake Velky and Roman Youngblut have some D2/D3 looks. Every one of our other
players has had D3 interest throughout the Midwest. Have heard from coaches from
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, MO, and Indiana.
