Defensive Line
There is little doubt that there are a number of college prospects within the
junior class along the defensive line but many of them have excelled at along
the edge. Christian Brobst of Sioux City Heelan,
Elliot Halsch of Iowa City Regina, DeVaughn McCullough
of Iowa City West, and Seth Snitker of Waukon all have the
frame to be a scholarship level player when it comes to college. What they
will be spending the next year proving is what exact level they will be
hopefully receiving those scholarships from.
As far as tackles go, Ben Spaeth of Spirit Lake will be one
to follow after he totaled 68 tackles and eleven for loss while helping his team
to the Class 2A State title.
Linebacker
Having grown up around football with his dad the head coach at Northern Iowa, it
is obvious when watching Cedar Falls linebacker Jared Farley
that he knows how to play football at a very high level. He led the Tigers
with 143 tackles while helping his club make an eventual run to the Class 4A
semifinals. For Farley, will other college coaches assume that he will be
suiting up for Northern Iowa or will they recruit him hard? Time will tell
here.
A.J. Allen of Waukee was a recent visitor to the first Iowa Junior
Day and has plans to trip to Iowa State for their upcoming Junior Day as well.
Also expect to hear names like Pete Swenson of Clear Lake,
Nathan Clayberg of Pella, and Daniel Vega of
Xavier over the next 365 days as well.
Defensive Backs
Proving that you are a BCS scholarship level defensive back within the state of
Iowa is always an uphill battle. The one who may have the best chance is
Rico Gafford of Dowling Catholic. He made the switch from
Des Moines East at the semester and will have an opportunity to suit up for a
team that is considered among the elite heading into 2013. He has early
attention from Iowa and Iowa State at this point.
Jake Gervase of Assumption and Philip Jacobson
of Heelan are two others that have excelled at the varsity level over
the last two years.
Overall Thoughts
These defensive players are
definitely talented but the major offers from college coaches so far has been
for in-staters on the offensive side off the football. It will be up to
this group and a host of others that they belong in the discussion for big time
scholarships.
