Quarterback
(Iowa's
Top
10 Quarterbacks in 2014)
He may make the switch to wide receiver in
college but Union quarterback Jay Scheel has proven to be the best of
the bunch at quarterback. This versatile athlete recently committed to the
University of Iowa and has a solid resume that includes a Class 3A State
championship as a sophomore. As a junior, Scheel threw for 1,593 yards, 19
touchdowns, and added 1,291 yards on the ground as well.
Eli Dunne of Grinnell, Jacob Sobotka of
Mount Ayr, Trent Solsma of Sioux City Heelan, and Sam Straub of Ames are among a few others to keep an eye on as well.
Running Back
(Iowa's
Top
10 Running Backs in 2014)
The honor of top running back still remains up
in the air as a number of athletes can make a case to be in the conversation.
Duncan Ferch of West Marshall spent last fall torching defenses but
like Scheel, his college future may be at a different position. He wrapped
up last fall with 2,264 yards and 33 touchdowns for a team that defied
expectations.
West Des Moines Valley running back Tyus Mason has played a
big role for the Tigers over the last few years and he was in attendance at the
recent University of Iowa Junior Day. He rushed for 1,163 yards while
finding the end zone ten times. As for small school athletes, don't forget
about Brady Frey of Aplington-Parkersburg and Clayton
Plowman of Adair-Casey.
Wide Receiver
(Iowa's
Top
10 Wide Receivers in 2014)
Will the state of Iowa host
its first five star recruit in the last decade? Urbandale wide receiver
Allen Lazard will certainly be in mix when the national team at Rivals
puts together their five star recruits for the Class of 2014. There is
little Lazard has not done on the football field and his commitment to Iowa
State that has Cyclones buzzing about his college potential. He caught 40
passes for 928 yards, 11 touchdowns, and also added 90 tackles defensively.
What makes him so elite is his 6-foot-4, 190 pound frame.
Many felt the eventual 4A champions from Ankeny were only seniors but wide
receiver Marshall Clark has been the go-to wide out for the
Hawks over the last two years. He bounced back from mono early in the year
to end as one of the top wide outs in the state. Mitch Steger
of Dyersville-Beckman, Connor Niles of Sioux City
Heelan, and Alex Brammer of Ames are all playmakers as well.
Tight End
Time will tell what position Xavier athlete
Matt Nelson will end up at but his 6-foot-8, 230 pound frame is
something that few players can match. There is a reason why he has
Division I basketball offers so don't be surprised to see his recruiting stock
rise rapidly once a school becomes the first to offer him. He helped the
Saints on their way to a Class 4A runner up finish.
Southeast Polk tight end Tate Christensen is a unique
prospect as well due to his size and speed. His name will be repeated
frequently for the Rams this spring on the track.
Offensive Line
(Top
10 Offensive Linemen in 2014)
Ross Pierschbacher of Cedar Falls was a rare starter for the Tigers as a
freshman and college coaches took notice of that ability early. Oklahoma,
Notre Dame, and schools across the country offered but his connection to the
University of Iowa will keep him close to home for his college football.
Expect Pierschbacher to be rated as one of the top linemen in the entire country
for the Class of 2014.
Keegan Render of Indianola remains the most sought
after undecided junior with offers from Iowa and Iowa State. He appears to
be taking his time before making a college decision and will be working hard to
learn more about what both programs have to offer.
Landon Carney of Pleasant Valley, Ross Reynolds of
Waukee, Austin Holzer of Cedar Rapids Kennedy, and Cole Turner of Cedar Rapids Xavier are a few others to follow as well.
