What we learned from the weekend
The number one thing that seemed
to stand out to me was the Barnstormers 17U, 16U, and 15U all heading out of
state and winning championships within the Kansas City Classic. They did a
familiar sweep at the State AAU tournament last month but doing it against elite
out of state competition says a lot about what this group can accomplish in
front of college coaches during the July evaluation period.
Even with Spencer Haldeman and Luke McDonnell both having verbally committed
to Northern Iowa, the rest of this squad has plenty to prove in front of college
coaches. Will Brady Ernst, Cortez Seales, and Ethan Steinbronn decide
before the summer? Time will tell but each holds at least one Division I
offer and many others will be watching them play during this vital time.
The Iowa Pump N Run, Iowa Prep, and the Iowa Mavericks Orange also made great
runs during tournaments as well over the weekend. The depth that the state
continues to showcase not just in state but also out of state on the AAU circuit
is really showing and college coaches are taking notice.
With the holiday weekend ahead, it means that nearly all teams will finally
be getting an opportunity to stay close to home for the weekend. It is a
much deserved break for these athletes and especially the coaching staffs.
